Angus Council

Angus Council provides local government services to citizens, businesses and visitors to the Angus area, including Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar and Kirriemuir.

Angus Council was planning a major change program including the rollout of a new wide area network infrastructure and the provision of wireless broadband where possible. Angus has a diverse and rural geography and as such, high-performance communications do not always stretch to more remote areas. A mixture of wireless, broadband and wired technology was required to support its 4,500+ users across the Council area with over 80 Citrix servers also deployed, adding to the complexity.

The Council contracted Assure to carry out a detailed health check of key applications, the Citrix estate and the network-wide area and local area networks. This provided a baseline before investing in the proposed enhancements.

Assure deployed specialist Riverbed monitoring tools onsite at Angus HQ Data Centre over a six-week timeframe. Statistics were gathered and analysed by Assure consultants incorporating Citrix, Java and .Net based applications with wide area and local area network performance statistics.

The detailed analysis showed that although the Citrix and applications estates formed an excellent architecture, overall performance would be enhanced considerably with investment in a proposed network architecture. This provided Angus with certainty that their investment would provide substantial benefits to users of the Council’s IT systems.

The outputs we received from Assure provided us with unprecedented levels of certainty on the way forward. This would enable us to optimise the end-user experience ensuring no unnecessary spend.
